Is The Helix Midnight Right For Me?
In our 360 Lab, our three testers – who range in size from 130 pounds to 250 pounds – each tried the Helix Midnight in a variety of sleep positions. The mattress was most comfortable for our petite and average-weight testers. However, larger sleepers may prefer a firmer bed with more support for their bodies.
Lightweight Sleepers (less than 130 pounds)
We rank the Helix Midnight as a 5 or 6 on a firmness scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the firmest. This medium firmness level can be ideal for lightweight sleepers who often experience mattresses as firmer than average-weight sleepers do (since they don’t sink in as easily as sleepers who weigh more). Our petite sleep tester did not feel any strain from the Midnight, finding it wasn’t too firm against her pressure points while lying on her side and back.
If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, you’ll want a mattress that can support your midsection enough to keep it aligned with the rest of your body. If it doesn’t, it can cause your spine to curve and lead to back pain. Our 130-pound tester found that the Midnight did not provide adequate midsection support. Instead, her stomach dipped into the mattress, putting strain on her neck and lower back.
Average-weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)
Helix recommends the Midnight mattress for side sleepers specifically. These sleepers tend to feel pressure on their shoulders and hips, so they may benefit from a mattress that can cushion these areas. The Helix Midnight could offer the right level of contouring for average-weight side sleepers to feel comfortable. At the same time, coils beneath the foam lend support, which could appeal to back sleepers.
Our 190-pound sleep tester found that the Helix Midnight felt supportive for every sleep position. However, other similarly sized sleepers may not have the same experience, especially those who mainly sleep on their stomachs. As was the case with our petite sleep tester, average-weight stomach sleepers could prefer a more supportive feel from their mattress. Several other professional sources agree that the Midnight is too plush for this type of sleeper.
Heavyweight Sleepers (more than 230 pounds)
The Helix Midnight is on the softer side, and the edges did not feel particularly strong to us during our tests. These features made it less than ideal for our largest sleep tester, who weighs about 250 pounds, as he could feel the mattress sagging when he lay on it.
A better fit for these sleepers could be the Helix Plus, which is specifically designed for plus-size sleepers.
Helix Core Collection
There are six total mattresses within Helix’s Core collection. Each mattress is built to support side, back, stomach, or a combination of these sleeping positions with the appropriate support and firmness level that’s needed. Core collection mattresses contain five total layers that make up an 11.5-inch height. These beds have reinforced edge support only along the lengthier sides, so if you need all four corners covered, look to the Luxe and Elite collections. With Core mattresses, Helix offers free shipping, a 100-night sleep trial to test it out for yourself, and 10-year warranty coverage.
Helix Luxe Collection
The Luxe collection expands upon the base models with an extra pillow top layer, thicker support foams, and pocketed coils that keep the most support around your lower back. Altogether the Luxe collection beds have an increased height of 13.5 inches. They come with free shipping, a 100-night sleep trial, and an extended warranty of 15 years. Within the Luxe collection, you can find the Helix Midnight Luxe, Sunset Luxe, Moonlight Luxe, Dusk Luxe, Twilight Luxe, Dawn Luxe, and the Plus Luxe made for taller and heavier sleeper.
Helix Elite Collection
The Helix Elite collection encompasses the most luxurious beds the brand has to offer: the Helix Midnight Elite, Sunset Elite, Moonlight Elite, Dusk Elite, Twilight Elite, Dawn Elite, and the Plus Elite. These mattresses are outfitted with the most support features, including a pillow top designed for pressure relief, five layers of memory foam for extended cushioning, two microcoil layers, and a pocketed coil core with reinforced support around the center and edges. It is 16 inches in height and is backed by free shipping, a 100 night sleep trial, and 15 year warranty.
