Latex mattresses are quite popular because they are durable, contain more natural materials than other mattress options, and they offer good value to mattress shoppers.

Like memory foam, latex conforms to your body. However, it bounces back more quickly as you shift. For this reason, it is easier to change positions on a latex bed than on a memory foam bed. In fact, in many ways, latex mattresses were the original memory foam.

These beds have been on the market since the 1950s, well before modern memory-foam became an option, but current latex options are more comfortable than in previous generations. When properly maintained, a latex mattress can last for up to 20 years. Some premium mattresses have warranties that last for 20 or even 25 years.

What is a Latex Mattress Made of?
You would be correct if you called a latex mattress a “rubber mattress”. The material to make a natural latex mattress comes from a rubber tree. Other beds, such as those with gel or memory foam, contain chemicals, so shoppers interested in a natural mattress are often attracted to the latex option.

Not all options in this category qualify as natural latex mattresses. Some latex beds have synthetic latex, which is still a type of rubber, but it is not from rubber trees. In other instances, a latex mattress could have a mixture of natural and synthetic materials.

There is some controversy about synthetic latex. Most people consider it chemical-free, but it is not as durable as a natural latex mattress, and it may or may not offer the same level of support.

A Natural, Organic Option
For people who are seeking a natural, organic mattress, latex mattresses are a good option. Mattresses that are 100% natural latex are also good for the environment. They come from sustainable materials, and they are biodegradable. Also, you do not need to worry about exposure to chemicals. Some padding, such as gel tops for mattresses, contain chemicals.

Another reason that people purchase latex mattresses is that the surface does not absorb allergens, and it is easier to clean. People with dust allergies often opt for latex mattresses for this reason. However, you should be aware that a small percentage of people have a latex allergy, so this type of bed will not be an option for them.

How Long Does a Latex Mattress Last?
A quality latex mattress can last for 10 years or more. The reliability is because rubber is a durable material, and it can bounce back to its original form again and again. Synthetic latex mattresses are usually less durable and may only last for a few years, depending on their quality.

You can often find blended mattresses that have both natural and synthetic latex. These tend to last as long as other types of common styles of beds. A quality blended latex mattress will last for 10 years or so. Finally, some beds are a hybrid that has latex and another component, such as memory foam, coils, or gel. These beds can have natural, synthetic, or blended latex, but natural latex is less common in these hybrid mattresses.

Price Range for Latex Mattresses
Natural latex mattresses typically start at about $700, though you can find blended and synthetic options in the $200-$400 range. Larger latex mattresses, such as king-size models, can top $1,000. Premium mattresses are in the $1,500-$2,000+.

However, some of these all-natural, high-end models have extensive warranties.

Latex Mattresses vs. Hybrid Mattresses
Latex mattresses offer some of the same features as hybrid mattresses. They conform to the body and provide the right level of support. Both these options are ideal for people with back or joint issues.

Hybrid mattresses are generally cheaper than natural latex mattresses, and, in general, you have more options in terms of firmness and features with hybrid mattresses than with latex mattresses.

However, some beds use latex combined with another material or with coils to create a latex hybrid. Finally, hybrid mattresses are more-widely available. 100% natural latex mattresses are harder to find, and you may have to purchase them online and wait for delivery.

How Firm is a Latex Mattress?
Latex mattresses are comparable with memory foam mattresses. They provide firmness and support, but they also have enough comfort and flexibility to conform to your body and your sleeping position. Modern latex mattresses come in different firmness levels, so you can find an option that fits your needs and your sleeping style.

The level of support offered by latex mattresses is ideal for people with back issues, and some physicians may suggest that people with pain issues purchase a natural latex mattress.
